Very excited over the developed tastings again this week; is this the new norm for local wine shops? Let’s hope so. Two wine shops that had regular tastings are blanking it recently. Let’s hope they come back. Only two regulars have yet to post or email, but will be updated as received, or seen.

Barrel is Pleased to Welcome Back Jon Wadman with Phelps Creek Vineyards!”Phelps Creek Vineyards focuses on estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Columbia Gorge AVA. Vineyard care takes center stage leading up to wine production. Sustainable agricultural practices combined with careful management of the fruit yields on the vines leads to the noted intensity of the winesour bottlings. Total production is around 5000 cases.
”Phelps Creek first planted their oldest vines of Pinot Noir in 1990, shortly adding a block of Dijon clone Chardonnay two years later. Incrementally, they expanded the vineyards and now nurture 30 acres (25 Acres of Pinot Noir, 4.5 acres of Chardonnay and 1/2 acre of Pinot Gris). In addition to estate grown fruit, Phelps Creek enjoys long-term relationships with some of the most desirable vineyards throughout the Columbia Gorge AVA.”Join us this Friday as we welcome back Jon Wadman.

Lindsay Green of Vertical Wines will be pouring selections from Washington, France, Italy and South Africa:

“Graham Beck Brut Rose South Africa $18.99
”Aromas of raspberries, cherries and a few secondary whiffs of minerality. A lively mousse but fine in the mouth, with subtle red berry flavors enlivened by bright acids. Brisk on the palate, showing hints of oyster shell and fresh lavender. Flirtatious and fun, yet elegant and structured, it's perfect for all seasons and settings
Gilbert Cellars Rose of Mourvedre Yakima Valley 2013 $14.99
”Gilbert's tip of the hat to Bandol Rose rocks. Fresh and lively, gushing with strawberry alongside hints of Moroccan spices and melon. Creamy textured, with a clean and refreshing finish. A total winner.
Lone Birch Gewurztraminer Yakima Valley 2011 $8.99
”A delicate fruit-forward bouquet pear and melon. Light-bodied and crisp with lingering flavors of pear and citrus fruit.
Gosseaume Gamay Rouge 2013 $13.99
”Henri Chapon : “Although Touraine Gamay is often seen as a frail and simple wine, it is very possible to produce rich and spicy wines if the fruit is picked when ripe and clean and the vinifications carried out carefully, giving the wine time to ‘make itself’ and express itself. As often with the Gamay grape variety, the first thing that strikes you is the seductive fuschia colour.
”One also immediately notices the elegance of the nose which although remaining light, draws us in with its spicy pepper and liquorice notes on a base of red fruits. On the palate too, fresh red fruits delicately reveal themselves, so typical of this grape variety. We have here a classic example of Gamay that is structured and supple, yet has retained its fresh drinkable character.
”Drink it lightly chilled (but not too cold) with white meats, grilled foods and barbeques. Don't hesitate to let it breathe a little which allows all the red fruit aromas to come to the fore.”
Campobello Chianti 2013 $9.99
”This attractive ruby-red wine has light, fruity aromas with a delicate hint of violets. With lively cherry flavors, this medium-bodied Chianti is an excellent accompaniment to a wide range of meals, especially roasts and traditional Tuscan cuisine.
Patit Creek Red Columbia Valley 2011 $14.99
”Ripe red fruits and savory backing spices showcase the 2010 vintage well. The profile and structure suggest a much more expensive wine than this everyday value

“Oregon Pinot Noir & a Red Burgundy Premium Pour ($15)

“Friday June 27th 2014 4 pm - 7:30 pm @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines

I must admit, the 2012 vintage has turned out perfect Pinots to follow 2010 and 2011. Those earlier two vintages are made for cellaring and the better ones should be left alone for at least a few more years. Then along comes 2012, a vintage of plush, full, velvety Pinots that are delicious to drink now as you wait for the 10's & 11's to come around or you can cellar them if you like. That's the beauty of different styles of vintages.

“All of the Oregon Pinots in this flight are from 2012 with the exception of the DePonte 2009 Eastburn, a wine that we sold a truckload of in a recent offering. One of the all time great values in Oregon Pinot, period! I decided to do a premier cru Red Burgundy for the premium just to have a bit of a comparison with a wine from the homeland of Pinot Noir. I had the opportunity to enjoy a bottle the other night with Perry Bishop, the local supplier for Domaine De Montille, and I was impressed with the drinkability of such a young Burgundy yet at the same time a wine with the solid structure to age effortlessly for years to come.

Guest Winemaker - Illahe Vineyards with Bethany Ford
Saturday June 28th 2014 6:00pm

“Bethany, (Brad's better half) found herself falling in love with Pinot Noir in the Santa Ynez Valley while she was achieving her degree in art at Biola University in Los Angeles. Inspired by the craft and process of making wine and having always wanted to live in the Northwest, she moved to Oregon in 2005.

“Bethany gained experience in sales at Whole Foods Market and then moved on to a full time wine career at Domaine Serene Winery, Argyle, and Methven Family Vineyards, before coming to Illahe. You might see her running around Portland selling wine, in her office snuggling with her new baby boy Beckett, or in the winery punching down fermenters and trying to learn some science.
