As most fans are awaiting the 1.8.2 title update for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, 2 Player Productions is getting ready to unleash their Minecraft documentary to the world. The documentary, The Story of Mojang, will take you back to the beginning of Minecraft, how it originated and what made it a success.
The Story of Mojang will allow us to follow Markus "Notch" Persson for about a year in 2011 after his fast rise to fame and fortune.
The documentary was first started through a Kickstarter, to try to receive pledges for the project. Attempting to raise $150,000, 2 Player Productions was successful enough to receive a total of $210,297.
Director Paul Owens told Eurogamer that we can expect to see The Story of Mojang in early December.
"December 7th is the aim," he noted, but clarified the studio "hasn't quite settled on the exact date." Regardless of the specific day, it will be available on DVD and as a digital release around then.
The viewers will be able to see, not only the success story, but an in-depth look at challenges faced by a studio during their first year in existence. The details on the Kickstarter listing reads:
We will analyze the unprecedented success of Minecraft, gain insight into its impact from journalists and industry professionals, and meet the fans whose lives have been changed by the game.
“Minecraft: The Story of Mojang” would represent 2 Player Productions’ second foray into feature films (following 2008’s critically-acclaimed “Reformat the Planet”) and is part of our ongoing mission to examine and celebrate the zeitgeist of contemporary gaming culture.
Eurogamer points out that notable industry figures like Tim Schafer, Peter Molyneux, Chris Hecker, and Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins are among the dedicated fans interviewed in the documentary.
Molyneux was even quoted saying, "It's far better than a god game or any game I've done. For sure... It's a fact!"
