The story of how universities became extinct

There are events taking place that presage the extinction of the university as we know it.

Trend 1: Not so much a trend than an event is the fact that Thrum, a Stanford tenured faculty left his teaching position to start an education start-up Udemy.  In other words the perceived risk for a faculty in a top position in giving up traditional education is less than the perceived benefit from an online education venture.

Trend 2: The demand from students (and President Obama) is for lower tuition.  With tight budgets, and tied in capital, schools are faced with a pressure to reduce tuition and increase spending.  Technology is the only way organizations can deliver in this environment

Trend 3: Schools need to offer education 24/7 in all locations and in all formats - their clients demand it.  Technology offers an answer

We believe that these trends, along with an enabling environment will lead to the extinction of universities as we know them.
