The Steakhouse at Azul, La Jolla, is serving up much more than stellar steak. The menu is laden with Prime aged beef, Wagyu, Prime seafood, organic Cornish hen and sides that will excite your salivary glands….so delicious is this food that you had better wear your spandex pants.
So, if you think that’s enough to make a restaurant gourmet….there’s yet another level or two. The staff is amazing, friendly, and knowledgeable. They are more than willing to offer wine pairing suggestions, and in a manner that is not even slightly pretentious. The wine list is extensive, including 23 by the glass.
Then there is the view…to die for. Azul sits on top of a bluff overlooking the calming deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. It’s not unusual to see dolphins, seals and an occasional whale. Paddle boarders, surfers, kayakers and swimmers are all out enjoying the ebb and flow of the water. The sun sets in all its majesty all while sipping on your favorite drink, eating gourmet food and being pampered by the excellent staff.
Jason was our waiter and he was spot on with his descriptions and recommendation of wine. We started off with Crisp Chardonnay that paired well with the Ahi Tuna Poke, with a sesame ginger sauce. Next up, baked Brie with toasted crisps – delicious!
Next we were brought a nice sparkling white wine to cleanse our pallet before the perfectly cooked aged, prime steaks came out center stage. Escorting the steak was a nice plump baked potato. The potato had its own entourage: a plank containing cheese, butter, sour cream, chives, and bacon bits. Then there were the three dipping sauces for our steaks; a creamy Roquefort, garlic and white truffle cream, and a port-glazed shallot. Each dipping sauce had its own bravado. If all that wasn’t enough, we also ordered a side dish, the bacon & chive Mac ‘n Cheese, scrumdiliumptous!
The steak was paired up with a Cabernet for me and a Malbec for my husband. We shared. Each had its own unique and wonderful bouquet and were excellent choices, recommended by Jason. It was fun to taste the wine with the different dipping sauces. The Malbec went extremely well with the white truffle cream sauce, they each complimented the other.
Just as we thought we were done, dessert came scampering out….Triple Chocolate Flourless Cake and a Banana Cream Pie Cheesecake all drizzled with chocolate. I felt that I had gone to heaven. This is why you need to where your stretchy pants…because you can’t miss dessert either. We didn’t think we could eat another bite until we encountered our first taste….All bets were off and we found room for a few more bites.
Come hungry and leave blissful!
