Women businesses have been increasing within the past several decades. Women and Veterans businesses are becoming the fastest growing groups throughout the U.S. Through the efforts of President Obama he has been improving and initiating programs that increase government and business opportunities to these groups.
Women business owners have once again taken part in the economy by being a strong force on providing job retention and employment. The State of Women-Owned Businesses Report indicates from 1997 to 2012 women businesses within California, New York, Texas, Florida and Illinois has been steady and have continually ranked amongst the Top 5 States for over 15 years. The fastest growth amongst women-owned businesses is now being seen primarily in Southern States: Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Mississippi and Texas.
The fastest growing industries for women businesses are: education services, health care and social assistance, administrative services, retail trade and other services. These industry trends display how women are beginning to look at being business owners and in doing business. They are launching into non-traditional industries and/or viewing these industries in a different light.
Women are tapping into businesses that expresses their passion and in what personally interests them. There are several government and corporations that has taken the charge to collaborate with women business owners. Each offers their own unique features from benefits, empowerment, education services and database listing to implementing and altering public policy that affect women and their businesses.
If you are a women-owned business and looking for these types of resources to help further your business efforts here are a few: eWomen Network, Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW) and National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). SBA is continually leading the charge in providing opportunities for disadvantaged businesses as well that would be advantageous for women. Under SBA’s Presidential Innovation Fellows, a pilot program-RFP EZ Project-has been created to streamline the process for small businesses in helping to reduce the costs, paperwork and complications of doing business with the federal government. This program can be an excellent source for Veteran business owners as well.
