"The Staircase Murders" is a movie based on the true story of Novelist Michael Peterson and the death of his wife Kathleen Peterson. The crime drama premiered on Lifetime Television in 2007. It is based on the book by Aphrodite Jones. (Starring Treat Williams)

"The Staircase Murder" synopsis/plot

When a novelist's wife is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, her husband becomes the number one suspect. After police began to investigate the husband's background, they learn that Michael Peterson may have been responsible for the death of another person years earlier.

The true story became a sensational media case in 2001 after a North Carolina woman was found dead at the bottom of a staircase. Police and court records show, that Kathleen Peterson, was discovered in a pool of blood in her home. Her husband Michael Peterson told police that she had fallen down the stairs, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Michael Peterson may have actually caused the death of his wife. He was arrested and convicted of her murder.

Today, he still sits in a North Carolina correctional facility.
