Paramount pictures released today the first trailer for “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge Out of Water.”

The trailer showcases the live action/CG animated hybrid film, which follows Spongebob and his friends who have to stop an evil pirate (Antonio Banderas) from taking over the world with a mystical book. The sequel sees Spongebob and the gang on land with super powers they’ll need to save the planet.

The film is based on the popular Nickelodeon series “Spongebob Squarepants.” The cartoon began in 1999—it is the longest running Nickelodeon cartoon ever.

It has been a decade since the original Spongebob film released in theaters. On a modest $30 million budget the film went on to gross $32 million its opening weekend and finished with $140 million—so a sequel is not completely out of left field.

“Sponge Out of Water’s” live action/CG animated approach may pay off financially—“The Smurfs” film from Sony Pictures grossed $563 million worldwide and its sequel grossed $347 million—monster numbers.

The sequel stars Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Douglas Lawrence and Antonio Banderas.

“The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge Out of Water” splashes into theaters February 13, 2015.

Box office numbers provided by Box Office Mojo.
