Marie Von Trapp, one of the inspirations to the hit Broadway musical, movie and television show “The Sound of Music,” has passed away. She was 99 years old. According to a February 22 report by US Weekly, Maria Von Trapp's health was the reason her father hired a nanny for his children.

Marie Von Trapp was the second oldest daughter in her family. She was the last remaining member of Austrian family who escaped Adolph Hitler and his Nazis in the 1930s. A family friend was surprised that she lived as long as she did, seeing she had suffered from a weak heart since she was a little girl.

The Von Trapp family moved to the United States in the 1930s. The family's story became the inspiration to “The Sound of Music,” just one of the many hit musicals Rodgers and Hammerstein created. It first appeared on Broadway in 1959.

Six years later, Julie Andrews starred in the movie adaption in 1965. Most recently, Oklahoma's own “American Idol” winner and country music star Carrie Underwood starred in a live television version.

Maria Von Trapp died in her sleep at her home in Vermont. At the time of publication, no information about a memorial service was available.
