The Soda Jerk Grand Opening Extravaganza at the Connecticut Post Mall

To me, soda is the drink of the gods, so how thrilled am I that The Soda Jerk, an old-fashioned soda fountain offering over thirty different flavors of soda, has opened up at the Connecticut Post Mall. And while this is awesome, I haven’t even gotten to the best part. The Soda Jerk is completely Steampunk themed.

What is a Soda Jerk? From the official Facebook site and event site:

The Soda Jerk:

1. a person who makes soda 2. an old-fashioned Soda Fountain at the post mall in Milford with a Steampunk flare: We offer 30 flavors of soda and 30 flavors of cotton candy as well as shakes, smoothies, and grilled sandwiches.

Def: A soda jerk is a person—typically a youth who operates the soda fountain in a drugstore, often for the purpose of preparing and serving flavored soda water or an ice cream soda. The name soda jerk came from the “jerking” action the server would use to swing back and forth the soda fountain handle when adding the soda water.

The American Drive-In Restaurant (2002) describes the archetypal soda jerk as being “[a] consummate showman, innovator and freelance linguist...the pop culture star of the Gilded Age.

I was able to stop by the shop the other night and it looks really cool. Unfortunately, I missed John, the father of this brainchild. I was able to speak with him a couple of months ago about the Soda Jerk vision and the actual process of pulling it all together. It’s really exciting to see it come to fruition, and I plan to talk with him soon about how things are going, although I think I can safely predict that our talk will be nothing but positive.

Are you getting thirsty yet? Check the place out for yourself. Tomorrow, Sunday, November 18, from 1 to 5, The Soda Jerk wants you to come down to the mall food court to celebrate at its Grand Opening Extravaganza. Wet your whistle and grab a bite, while being awed and amused by the talents of our friends DJ Recluse, Daniel Greenwolf, and many other hoopers, jugglers, and just overall amazing folks.

I plan to stop down at some point of the day, so if you see me down there, make sure to stop me and say, “hey.” Cheers!
