And that it was. A wintry mix of snow, ice, snow and more descended on the Lehigh Valley today cancelling some schools, work and more. More and more precipitation is expected as the night continues. This was the perfect day for snow play, winter weather activities, snow sensory play and of course for story time – The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.
This Caldecott Medal book is the perfect book about snow – snowy weather, the color white, science cold/warm, snow melt, water, hats, gloves, snow boots, jackets, the list is endless. Read The Snowy Day, follow and reenact some of Peter’s adventures in the snow.
If you are fortunate you can play in the snow and make footprints and tracks in the snow, throw snowballs, make a snowman, snow angels , slide down hills and bring the snow in (just like Peter) and find out why it disappeared in the story.
The illustrations in the story can be great for making snowy art, white paint and stamps and drawing and painting scenes from the book. If you can take pictures and have your students (and you) make your own Snowy Day book. Whatever comes your way – embrace the weather and enjoy another snowy day!
