The Smithereens to rock The State Theatre

The alternative rock group The Smithereens are set to rock the State Theatre on Saturday, February 16, 2013. They are touring behind their 2011 release which was the bands first album of all new material since 1999 and the first original songs since “God Save the Smithereens” in 2005. In the years behind they put out a cover of the Who’s “Tommy”, an album of Beatles B Sides, a concert album, a Christmas album, a copy of The Beatle’s “Meet the Beatles” album called “Meet The Smithereens,” an album of live extended versions, and an anthology set.

The band which has been putting out music since 1980 really made it in 1986 with the release of “Especially for You”. The songs “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep” both charted in the top 25 on the Mainstream Rock Charts. Their 1988 follow up “Green Thoughts” landed a Mainstream Rock number one song “Only a Memory.” Two other songs charted in the top 40 as well “House We Used to Live In” and “Drown in My Own Tears.” 1989’s “11” album had two top 10 hits, the classic “Girl like You” and “Blues Before and after” which made it their most successful record. The album had a third hit “Yesterday Girl” which reached the 20th spot on the chart. 1991’s “Blow Up” had three singles to reach the Top 40 of various charts. “Top of the Pops” reach number two on the Modern Rock Charts and peaked at 19th on the Mainstream Rock charts. “Tell Me When Things Went Wrong” reach 11th and 28th on the Modern Rock Charts and Mainstream Rock charts. A third song “Too Much Passion” reached the 37th spot on the US Hot 100 Chart. The band would have one more top 40 hit “Miles from Nowhere.” You can find out more about The Smithereens at their website.

Fans can expect The Smithereens to play all of their hits from their prime and a few songs from their latest release. I wouldn’t be surprised if the band played a couple of creative covers from bands that influenced them like The Beatles or The Who. The intimate club setting of the State Theatre will provide a place to experience The Smithereens up close. The venue’s kitchen will be open and bars will be serving all of your favorite drinks. The party starts at 7PM when the doors open and the music is scheduled to start at 9PM. The tickets to see this super group of 80s and 90s alternative rock are available for a bargain price of $21 and can be purchased here.
