Several members of the cast including Nia Long, Cocoa Brown, Terry Crews and William Levy joined Perry before the premiere to discuss how their personal lives mirrored the characters in the movie and how they connected to the challenges faced by single movies.

In penning, producing and starring in the comedic movie, Perry provides a film that actually celebrates single motherhood. Perry believes the message of the movie is a celebration and is important in celebrating the lives of single moms. He pointed to Jared Leto’s Oscar speech in which he thanked his mother as an example of how the strength of a single mother can influence and inspire.

“I was sitting behind her (at the Oscars) and (could) see the emotion of her being a single mom. I just think that it’s about them being celebrated, so it’s pretty exciting.”

Actor William Levy also expressed his excitement and appreciation about the film because, not only did it mark his U.S. film debut, but because he was raised by a single mother in his native Cuba. Her guidance and dedication allowed for him to see “a dream come true.” Symbolically his first U.S. film is a film about single mothers.

And for Cocoa Brown, the film became even more personal for her as she actually became a single mother while filming which is a reason her personal life mirrored her character of Lytia.

“The movie has been very therapeutic to me, and the village that I created with my castmates.”

Tyler Perry and the cast also expressed appreciated for each other. The cast complimented Perry on his hard work in putting the film together and Perry took time before the screening to thank his cast and dedicated the film to his aunt, who was a single mother.

“The Single Moms Club” makes its official release on March 14.
