The Simply You Calendar Project – Part 2

1840s Carrollton Inn supports survivorship!

“When I was contacted about participating in the Simply You calendar project, I couldn't say no,” say Inn owner, Timothy Kline. “The Inn is a vital part of the community and being supportive by participating in such worthy causes as supporting survivors of cancer and domestic was an easy decision.”

The 1840s Carrollton Inn is a quaint bed & breakfast situated on the edge of Little Italy, an ethnic community of fabulous Italian restaurants in downtown Baltimore. The Inn was originally owned by the Carrollton family, the original land owners granted by the King of England. The property is an historic landmark in Baltimore.

The Simply You Calendar Project was designed as a fundraiser for the Atikal Foundation to support programs that will assist survivors of domestic violence and/or cancer. Nicole Barber formed a committee, found volunteers to donate the outfits for the models to wear and selected the twelve women who would be featured on the calendar. Six women represent cancer survivors and the other six are domestic violence survivors. (See Simply You Calendar Project – Part 1)

Nicole realized she needed a fabulous venue for the photo shoot for the calendar. A place with a variety of settings to match the various models, the different moods... something that would help capture the essence of the project. Finding the 1840s Carrollton Inn was just such a place.

When one enters the Carrollton Inn on Albemarle Street, you need to bypass the staircase to enter the lobby which is staffed by innkeepers. The modern accommodation of an elevator has been installed to get luggage and visitors to the rooms on the upper floor. And while the Inn is more than 100 years old, each room is meticulously decorated in period décor – quite beautiful and comfortable!

The Inn's public rooms include a formal dining room, a smaller more intimate dining room, and a comfortable sitting room with chairs, a settee, a chess table and a fire place. A great place to relax after a trip to the aquarium, the Inner Harbor or other tourist destinations around Baltimore.

Each room has a king sized canopied bed, a small sitting area with table and chairs. Each room is also equipped with a fire place for the chilly nights of spring and fall or those really cold winter nights that are common to Baltimore. One break with the ambiance of the 1800s is the very modern bathrooms. Double sink counters and a large jacuzzi tub are available for the comfort and enjoyment of all who stay at the Inn.

The 1840s Carrollton Inn property also contains the “Carriage House.” This historic building is the site of many weddings and large gatherings. The Simply You crew gathered there to attend to make-up and hair before changing into the donated outfits, and not to forget to accessorize each outfit with jewelry. It was fantastic to have such a large space to spread out for all the little details of the photo shoot. The survivors enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of such a majestic setting.  The ladies shared their stories as they prepared for their turn in front of the camera... stories of breast cancer, colon cancer, non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and more.

Between the inn and the Carriage House is a cobblestone walk way that includes a veranda and a tree-canopied area that opens onto more cobblestones that is surrounded by a beautiful garden. On the sunny June day of the photo shoot, the flowers were in full bloom, providing a wondrous backdrop for several of the models.

The ladies, the volunteer assistants, and the staff of the Inn enjoyed a wonderful day of excitement as the Simply You Calendar Project progressed through perhaps the most essential step of the process.

In Part 3 of this series, more details of the photo shoot and the stories of the models and their survivorship.
