Part I
The Atikal Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to improving outreach and services to underserved and underemployed communities in Maryland. The organization supports activities that lead to economic self-sufficiency, community involvement and personal empowerment through strategies that encourage entrepreneurship, interdependence and improving quality of life. A committee was formed to organize the fundraiser to support services for cancer and domestic violence survivors.
The Simply You Calendar Project was initiated as a fundraiser to provide funds to support services to survivors of domestic violence and cancer. In early 2011, a call went out throughout the Foundation and all their family, friends and contacts to find twelve women - six who would represent cancer survivors and six to represent domestic violence issues.
By June, the twelve representatives were chosen. Three boutiques were found who volunteered to provide the outfits the ladies wore at the photo shoot on June 26. Three Mary Kay representatives volunteered to do make-up for the models.
The 1840s Carrolltown Inn, (Albermarle Street, Baltimore City) volunteered the use of their historic location. This fabulous bed and breakfast is a perfect backdrop for the ladies to wear their various outfits.
The twelve models were recruited from around Maryland and one from northern Virginia. The model representing domestic violence from Baltimore is from Owings Mills in west Baltimore County; and, the cancer representative is from Essex on the eastside of the County.
As the project progresses, more information will be available. The calendar is due to be launched with a fashion show on October 8 when the ladies will reprise their photo shoots outfits for those in attendance at the dinner.
Next week, an article will be posted providing more information about the Carrolltown Inn's participation in the project. After the models are interviewed, their stories will also be posted here.
