During the 16 day shut-down of the federal government and the congressional battle to raise the federal debt ceiling, the Republican / Tea Party and many in the news media were quick and eager to “equalize” blame to include Congressional Democrats and President Obama.
They were wrong.
According to USA Today the District’s “…economy could take a whopping 5.59 percentage point dive in the fourth quarter. Next hardest hit: Maryland with an expected GDP reduction of 1.11 percentage points, Virginia 0.73 percentage points and West Virginia 0.64 percentage points.”
It is clear the American people saw the truth and properly held the Republican / Tea Party accountable for the stupid and idiotic decision to shut-down the federal government to defund and or linking the elimination of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to raising the federal debt ceiling.
While the ACA is law and Americans are signing up and enrolling, the ACA website has not fared as well. Let’s be clear the ACA website is not the program which seeks to provide affordable health coverage for all Americans.
The reaction to the glitches of the ACA website launch has been made reflexively political by the Republican / Tea Party and an intellectual overreach by the news media.
Just using my cable news network of choice for information, CNN journalists/reporters like Mr. Chris Cuomo, Ms. Brooke Baldwin, Ms. Kate Bolduan, Mr. Jake Tapper, Mr. Jim Acosta, Ms. Carol Costello, Ms. Ashleigh Banfield, and Mr. Wolf Blitzer have overplayed the website’s troubles.
The rollout of the ACA is not a failure. However, the CNN coverage has been sloppy, if disingenuous. Moreover, most of CNN interviews on the federal shutdown and the ACA have been with strident Republican critics of the ACA and President Obama.
While the launch of the ACA website was less than stellar, calls for the resignation of Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius by Republican members of Congress should be seen for what they are - absurd.
News media reports suggesting her ouster are just as ridiculous. CNN, under its new leadership has taken a sharp turn toward less objectivity. Mr. Jeff Zucker, there is not any honor in competing with Fox News in a race to the gutter.
Finally, to CNN and other media outlets, not all American military veterans are white and not all American military veterans oppose President Obama.
