Actor Michael Jace pleaded not guilty Wednesday in the murder case of his wife, April Jace, who was shot to death inside their Hype Park home on May 19. Jace, most known for his role as a police detective on “The Shield,” made the plea during his appearance in a Los Angeles court.
The 51-year-old actor was arrested and booked in connection with the shooting after police found April Jace dead in her home. According to police reports, Jace called 911 to report that his wife had been shot. Neighbors also called 911 when they heard gunshots. Some neighbors also reported seeing Michael Jace pull into the driveway just moments before his wife and children arrived home. A popping sound was heard thereafter and when police arrived, Jace was seen standing in the doorway unarmed as his wife laid in clear view, dead from multiple gun shot wounds.
The sad part of the horrific night was that the two children of the couple were inside the house at the time of the shooting. The children were taken to stay with relatives in wake of the tragedy. Jace has had no contact with them and on Wednesday a protective order was issued during his arraignment, preventing Jace from having any form of communication with them. Bail was also set at $2 million.
The actor had no previous arrests before the May 19 murder and a possible motive for the slaying of April Jace is still under investigation. A police statement following the killing suggested the motive to be domestic violence, but no evidence was found. Financial reports have shown that Michael Jace appeared to have suffered deep financial strain over the last few years. Whether this has any connection to any strain on the relationship is also being investigated. A preliminary hearing is set for August 1, in which investigators will testify about why they arrested Michael Jace.
