The Seduction of Scent - Bell Museum, April 18

You know who you are if you're a fan of your nose. You dive into bath and body stores at the Mall of America. Every time a new niche perfume comes around, you leap on it. When your neighbor bakes cookies, you inhale as deep as you can, and those late springtime walks have more to do with the scent wafting from the petals than they do with the warm weather or the salutory effect on your health.

Avery Gilbert knows about you too, you nosey person. You are part of his study and science of olfaction. You can hear his theories and studies on scent and what they do to you, how the fragrance industry uses them on you, and how your own sense of smell guides you in ways you're not even aware of by attending the "Seduction of Scent" at the Bell Museum on Saturday, April 18.

Come to discuss Gilbert's groundbreaking book "What the Nose Knows: the Science of Scent in Everyday Life," and his observations of how our sense of smell is used in attraction and repulsion. Afterwards enjoy a reception with wine and locally produced desserts.

The event is co-sponsored by Minnesota Monthly magazine. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door; Bell Museum members receive a $10 discount. For tickets and more information, call (612) 624-9050.
