Doing cardio is important to your health. One of the keys to having an effective cardio workout is to make sure you don't injure yourself in the process. There are many ways that you can injure yourself doing different types of cardio. Most injuries are preventable, if you do a few things to make sure you are safe and prepared.
If you are using any type of machine in your workout, learn how to use it before you start, many machines can cause injuries if they are used incorrectly.
Use a heart rate monitor, either on the machine or a wrist model. Stay below your max heart rate to be safe. Stay in the zone. If you go over your max, walk until you bring your heart rate down to a safe place to continue.
Don't do a hard cardio workout for at least an hour after a meal. You will not feel good if you are full, and it may make you sick if your too full.
If your cardio workout is outdoors, make sure you are correctly dressed for the weather conditions. It is always better to have to take off a layer while your working out, than to be cold.
If your doing an extended cardio workout, make sure you have enough water with you to drink so you don't get dehydrated.
If you're riding a bike, wear a helmet.
During a workout, if you get any sharp pains, or have problems breathing, or any other pains that are not soreness, stop and walk until you recover. Always have a cell phone with you in case it is something more serious.
Do weight training on off days to build muscle. Strong muscles are the best way to avoid injuries to joints.
Always get the go ahead from your doctor before you start any exercise program.
Get a good pair of shoes. Bad shoes are a big cause of shin splints, and foot, knee and hip injuries.
Make sure you are aware of these issues, and be prepared. You can have many years of being productive and getting an injury free cardio workout, if you follow these few tips.
