Studio Ghibli's 2010 animated feature, The Secret World of Arrietty, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, will be showing for one day only, courtesy of New York International Children's Film Festival.
The Secret World of Arrietty is based on the book, The Borrowers, by Mary Norton. The film was written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa, starring Mirai Shida and Ryunosuke Kamiki. The tale centers around the borrower Arrietty living under the floorboards of a home belonging to a young human boy named Sho. Arrietty befriends Sho and eventually her and her family must escape detection from the house's maid.
Studio Ghibli announced the film in 2009 and Yonebayashi became the youngest director of the studio, making his debut on this film. The Secret World of Arrietty was released on July 17th and received critical acclaim and success in Japan, becoming the highest grossing film of 2010 and having since earned 126 million worldwide. The film was also awarded Animation of the Year at the 34th annual Japan Academy Prizes.
The Secret World of Arrietty is scheduled for distribution in the United States by Walt Disney Pictures on February 17, 2012.
The film will be showing at Symphony Space on Saturday, January 21st at 1PM. The film will be playing the dubbed English version and is suitable for all ages. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased at NYICFF's website.
