Meet the global trotter and street fashion photographer, Scott Schuman. His blog, The Sartorialist, on street fashion around the world attracts millions of visitors every day. Each of his photo of a person dressed in his/her own style attracts hundreds of comments. His girlfriend, Garance Dore, is a Parisian photographer who shares his passion for street fashion. As a matter of fact, she, once, was his student. Both of them go around the world and deliver to us the trends they spot on a street – be it in Milan, Moscow or Hong Kong.
They became so powerful in their art of creating the following on what’s worn by regular people around the world that designers want them at their shows, they sit them on first rows, they let them behind the scenes and they invite them to private parties. And what is more surprising is that neither Schuman nor Dore had any kind of "fashion photography" training. They learned themselves how to operate the cameras, and both of them come from non-fashion backgrounds.
To see a day of working the streets Scott Schuman did a video for Intel about his way of doing things. “When I look at something, I don’t think whether it’s fashionable enough…I just react to it” – says Schuman as he takes off the boots of a workers on a street in New York…
As for me, I’ve been always a big fan of Scott Schuman. His style of great visuals provide me with inspiration for each season and short texts don't take away from the photographs. As a global trotter myself, I share a passion for watching people – what they wear, how they talk, and how they create their own styles, and I always pick tips from other people's creativity... More than any fashion magazine out there, such street fashion bloggers provide a better insight on what works and not works in a everyday's life.
It’s one thing to see prêt-a-porter fashion on pages of a fashion magazine – clothes and accessories that most of the time don’t match what we can afford and/or do in a daily life. But when it comes to fashion bloggers and photographers in the likes of Tommy Ton, Sartorialist, Garance Dore, Bryan Boy and Elizabeth Spiers' Fashionista – the founder of Gawker.com who provides hip updates on news and fashion industry gossip, this might be the only way to see what works and what does not work for yourself.
Only if I had enough time to read all the fashion blogs out there, ahh…
