The SA Assistance League Rocks!

See also

No matter what community’s Assistance League thrift store I have ever visited, I have always found an organized bright and well-stocked thrift store manned by polite cheerful volunteers. The Assistance League Thrift Shop in Santa Ana that I perused recently proved to be consistent with that high Assistance League standard that I have found in past thrifting excursions elsewhere.
Their “Seconds” Street Thrift Shop is located near downtown Santa Ana at 1037 West First Street (on Third between Bristol and Flower Sts). Parking is easy as it has a nice fenced-in parking lot behind the place off Second Street. True to usual AL standards, the shop is airy and clean, having gone through a recent total renovation with a Grand Re-Opening of the store in May.
The shop is organized in their usual categories of men’s/women’s/children’s clothes, with a small vintage clothing section, assorted housewares, lots of hard cover and paperback books, and a smattering of some furniture and small appliances only. Thrifting is always such a treasure hunt with unexpected finds. For any Rosie O’Donnell fans out there, this particular AL thrift shop had a nice jean jacket with the show’s embroidered logo on the back for $6, perfect attire for that Rosie fan club meeting. There is a separate higher-end boutique nick-named Top Drawer in the adjoining room. Check out the higher end jewelry case there, maybe to accessorize that crisp fawn-colored three-piece Escada ladies’ suit available for a mere $60? Prices at an Assistance League are always pretty reasonable with bargains at hand.
Another good thing about the AL shops is their store websites. They are usually very detailed with photos of what has recently arrived in-store. This makes it easy for a thrift’n-ista hunting for something specific to see ahead of time if it is available there. See their website www.assistkids.org for store hours, donation policies, newly arrived goods and more.
Finally if you like to know that your money is going towards something constructive, AL of Santa Ana funds a host of causes. Their 2013 Operation School Bell provided school clothes and filled backpacks for 2,030 SA students, this year 22 Santa Ana high school students received $1000 scholarships and iPads, to name just a few. On Sunday, July 20 2014 from 3p-7p AL Santa Ana is organizing a huge fundraising festival downtown. Twenty to thirty of the hottest SA restauranteers (The Playground, Civic, Curry House, Original Mike’s, Starbucks, Ye Olde Ship, Latino Access, Ketri and many more) will offer their wares at THE BEST TASTE OF SANTA ANA. Proceeds go for great AL causes, so see www.assistkids.org for tickets ($25 until 1July, $40 at the door).
