TRE 2013 Newcomers

Besides the major brands, there were three NEW shoe companies that deserves a mention here.

Athletic Propulsion Labs (APL)

From Athletic Propulsion Labs basketball roots, the brothers Ryan and Adam Goldston, Load ’N Launch technology is a sophisticated feat of engineering located in the forefoot of the shoe just in front of the flex zone and the ball of the foot. The device features compression properties designed to provide an instant rebound effect that is transferred up through the foot to enhance vertical leap and propulsion. These shoes performed so well that they were banned from the NBA in 2010. But their remaining nine months of inventory was sold out in 3 days.

Now they are bringing that technology to running shoes. The Wind Chill is the first shoe in APL running line. Also coming soon is Joy Ride, built on APL’s Propelium platform, which features a proprietary blend of rubber and EVA. The company will also introduce a running shoe with a knit upper that looked to me a lot like the Nike Flyknit uppers.

Be Real Shoes

Be Real Shoes were conceived by Jason Applegate's own experience with the minimalist running movement. While he quickly fell in love with the more natural style of running and its health benefits, he found himself dissatisfied with the stylistic options, frustrated by fit, and longing for an even more minimalist construction.

Be Real shoes are designed to work seamlessly in every running environment. For the price of one shoe, you get a perfect trail shoe, crossfit shoe, and water shoe. The shoes are made in the USA utilizing eco friendly manufacturing techniques enabling the rubber soles to be 100% recyclable.

TESH Sports

TESH Sports focus is on performance sports footwear and apparel. TESH is launching zero drop athletic shoes designed by former baseball pro Samuel Taylor and built around the brand’s Kinetic Haptic System - consists of the shoe (Twitch 1.0) and a removable five-toe bootie (5T Sleeve); one shoe for your entire workout. The bootie has a compression fit-sleeve with a 4-mm-thick neoprene insole, and the shoe breathes and wicks moisture. You can wear the Twitch 1.0 across your dynamic workout or wear the 5T Sleeve alone for controlled training. The Twitch is built on an anatomically correct last with a spacious toe box for natural toe spread. thus giving better balance and a more powerful push-off. With an impressive corporate sports backing and funding, TESH is ready to turn some heads in 2014!

Samsara Fitness

Another newcomer (non-shoe vendor) to watch in the running and fitness category is True Form Runner treadmill, one of the innovative products from Samsara Fitness. True Form Runner is a motor-less treadmill (virtually maintenance free) that can cue proper running form and simulating road running. Get instant feedback on your running form and efficiency in just a few strides!

Here are our top product picks for TRE 2013 from the running footwear, running apparel, and running accessories category.

Top TRE 2013 Running Accessories Picks

Winner - Garmin Forerunner 620

Your next personal running coach could be the Garmin Forerunner 620. You no longer need to pay for a lab test to accurately obtain your VO2 Max. You no longer need time lapse night photography and lights to analyze your vertical bounce. You no longer need to go to an expensive lab to measure your ground contact time. Finally, you no longer need to manually count your cadence. Investing in a Garmin Forerunner 620 is a no-brainer as it is like a mobile running lab on your wrist.

We gave you a sneak preview of the Garmin Forerunner 620 here.

Runner Up - Magellan GPS ECHO

For those who carry a smartphone while running and not looking for a standalone GPS running watch like the Garmin Forerunner series, the ECHO from Magellan GPS with its open platform is the ultimate choice. As a smart running watch, the Magellan Echo is used for viewing and controlling fitness apps while your phone is tucked away - a customizable remote control. ECHO uses Bluetooth Smart to connect your smartphone and watch, putting the power of a smartphone on your wrist. At a glance, you can see distance, pace, heart rate, ground contact time, cadence, etc. from fitness apps and gadgets in real time. The power of the open platform can make or break the ECHO's popularity - for example, innovative biomechanics apps and sensors from Pegasus Sports Performance pack powerful features to the ECHO as demonstrated at the Magellan GPS booth.
