The Nutcracker has become a holiday family tradition and on Tuesday December 17 audiences across the United States can enjoy a performance by Great Britain’s Royal Ballet in participating theaters. The only participating theater in San Antonio is Cinemark McCreless Market.
The Royal Opera House’s Live Season presents this favorite classical ballet that includes Tchaikovsky’s famous score performed by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy is danced by Royal Ballet principal dancer Laura Morera with Federico Bonelli as the Prince.
The Nutcracker is a two act ballet that takes place on Christmas Eve as family and friends come together to decorate the Christmas tree. After the children are presented with gifts Clara becomes fascinated with a toy wooden nutcracker. She later has a dream involving a Christmas tree that magically grows, a Nutcracker Prince and a battle between an army of gingerbread soldiers and the mice led by the Mouse King. It is based on a story by E.T.A Hoffman titled ‘The Nutcracker and the King of Mice.’ Tchaikovsky composed the score and years later its most popular part is ‘The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.’
