An unassuming and aged building located in historic North Oak Cliff, on the corner of Davis Street and Tyler and just blocks away from the Bishop Arts District, houses a charming boutique called The Rose Garden. Half thrift store, half specialty shop, The Rose Garden calls itself an “upscale resale shop with a little bit of everything.” This certainly describes its mix of men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, house wares, jewelry and handcrafted candles.
The clothing may be second-hand, but most of it appears almost new. Designer items from Banana Republic, Donna Karen, and Calvin Klein line the racks, along with lower-end merchandise from Target and Old Navy. With clothes neatly arranged by size and color and separated into categories of tops, bottoms, dresses, and suits, browsing the selection becomes an easy task.
Most of the tops are priced between $14.99 and $16.99, and suits can range from $30 to $50. Yet the store frequently offers half price bargains on its clothing and accessories.
In addition to clothes, belts and shoes, The Rose Garden offers house décor items, such as ceramic vases, wall hangings, and photo frames. Handcrafted gifts, including jewelry, candles, and incense are available as well.
What adds to The Rose Garden’s appeal is that it is part of a neighborhood organization known as the 2000 Roses Foundation. According to its website, the 10-year-old-foundation “provide[s] transitional rehabilitation – i.e. aftercare – for women whose backgrounds include substance abuse and/or domestic violence and are re-entering the community after incarceration by providing housing, medical care, counseling, job skills, continuing education and life skills training.”
Through The Rose Garden, the foundation allows women to practice retail and production job skills. They create the handmade crafts sold in the store, and they exercise customer service and sales skills by interacting with shoppers. Led by 2000 Roses Foundation co-founder Kelly Wiley, the staff of The Rose Garden generates a welcoming and pleasant environment for all patrons.
With its assortment of sale products and its goal to empower women, The Rose Garden gives Oak Cliff residents a quality shopping destination within our own neighborhood.
The Rose Garden sits at 841 W. Davis Street. Store hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information about The Rose Garden and the 2000 Roses Foundation, call 214-941-1333 or visit their website.
