We were quite enthusiastic about the Rose and Crown last year because of their fast enthusiastic service and tasty burgers and fries, so we returned this year interested in trying some of their new menu options.
We ordered the Vegetable Quesadilla ($12.99) with smoked Gouda and grilled vegetables as one starter. It was excellent, although there was much more food there than we needed for a starter. The cheese was hot and creamy and the vegetables crisp and flavorful.
For our other starter we struck out with the Clam Fritters which are made from local clams, and jalapenos and served with lemon and tartar sauce. They were dry and tasteless with no hint of clam flavor, and only a little heat from the ground up jalapenos in the batter. We didn’t try to finish them.
Our two hamburgers represented two extremes in hamburger serving: one was a classic burger and the other one pile high with options (called The Hangover on the menu). Either would have been good if they were medium rare as ordered. Instead, we found them dry and tasteless.
And sadly, worst of all, the one freshly made French fries are now made from frozen fries. Mealy and not very flavorful.
We are sorry we can’t recommend the Rose and Crown this year: the food isn’t very good (except that quesadilla) and the fries worse. The service is still enthusiastic, although the waitress had no idea about why they had switched to frozen fries, and didn’t appear to know that they had.
