I tried out two new date spots for you. We had four hours of babysitting on Saturday night and our car was overheating (we hadn't taken it in yet) so we opted to ride the bus instead, which added to the adventure. I will describe the path of our date night which may be helpful to those New Yorkers without a car.
We took the B1 bus in Brighton Beach right to Avenue X and McDonald Avenue to Downhouse Restaurant and Lounge. They have a sultry interesting inside with murals and a cool outside patio with seating. After 11 there is usually entertainment and dancing. Unfortunately we couldn't stay till 11 and the outside patio was occupied by a birthday party at the time. But we peaked out and it looked lovely and would make for a fun date. In the winter they have a tent and it's cozy and heated. The food was good and was moderately priced. I got the organic chicken with mushrooms and my husband got chicken wings. We split calamari. We each had one alcoholic drink. The total bill was $70, which is a bit more than we're used to but not bad, especially were dancing and entertainment included. So, if you want a quiet romantic vibe, go to dinner there early like we did. If you're single and want to meet people and dance, our waitress says people don't begin to get there till 11 or 12. This made us feel old!
Then we took the B4 bus (which luckily was literally right there) to Bringham & Bragg Road (near Emmons Avenue) right to our second date location, OPM. Their rooftop lounge was open and we arrived at 8PM while it was still pretty empty. This was one of the most amazing romantic locations I'd been to and I would highly recommend it. It was a boon that we came early because we had the whole space to ourselves and it was quiet. The sky was midnight blue overhead and they had little tents with benches and tables with candles and cushions and a lit bar. If you walked to the back area you could see the ocean and skyline. The waiter said that entertainment started at 11 and there was dancing then and it got crowded late. Maybe it was also empty at that time because it was Labor Day weekend? They take credit cards with a $50 minimum on the roof deck and serve food there. You can also bring cash. We had already eaten and just wanted drinks. They gave my husband a great deal with $5 cash for two sodas (which was really nice) but I think he said sodas are usually $5 each and you can check out their menu for prices. Some food is expensive there but I noticed that sushi is not so you can probably choose less expensive items, including appetizers and still partake of the great ambiance and entertainment. I think that roof deck would be an amazing spot for a small wedding too! I did read some bad reviews about it being crowded on the roof deck and there being a minimum charge just to sit there but this did not happen to us. Maybe one way to avoid this is to go early for dinner before the dancing?
Anyway, we took the B4 bus back to Coney Island Avenue and Neptune Avenue. We walked straight on Coney Island Avenue to the Boardwalk and then took a beach stroll. There was a Russian DJ on the Boardwalk so we danced a bit under the stars and made it home before 10 to relieve our babysitter!
For those of you who would rather take a subway, for Downhouse Lounge you can take the F train to the Avenue X stop and walk a few blocks there. You can take the Q train to the Sheepshead Bay stop and then walk awhile to OPM or take a cab from the train stop. Contact information for locations is below.
Enjoy the outside lounges and decks while you still can!
Viva la romance!
