In the dental industry, the production of dentures using acrylic resin and a number of other plastics has been in use for close to a century. How are those items manufactured and with what benefits?
The first step in the manufacturing process for custom dentures is to be fitted properly. Each of our mouths is different and, the dentures need to fit properly to reduce any issues that could take place. A mold is going to be taken of both your upper and lower jawbones and an evaluation will take place to determine how your upper and lower jaw come together and how your teeth should come together as well.
The molds that were made by your dentist will be sent to a dental laboratory and a temporary set of dentures, made out of wax, will be sent back to the dentist. This will be checked for proper fit, to ensure that they come together properly and to check your smile. This will allow for any adjustments that are necessary before the final dentures are made.
When the wax mold is sent back to the lab, it will be filled with special dental acrylics to make a negative impression of the mouth of the patient. This will then be filled with wax, in order to produce a more accurate mold. Again, acrylics will be added and once they are hardened, it is sent back to the dentist for a further fitting.
Additional changes may be made at the laboratory and the teeth will be chosen and inserted into the mold. After a final fitting, it will be sent back to the laboratory and acrylic will be injected into the mold to replace the wax. This will hold the teeth in place permanently and produce the final dentures, which will be worn by the patient.
