As the Rim Fire in Tuolumne County Calif. grows to over 125,000 acres the world is holding it's breath in prayer for the residents, wildlife, forest, homes, and thousands of brave fire fighters. On August 22, 2013 CBS News reported an update on the Rim Fire that confirmed that the fire has burned a small area in Yosemite's back country and now threatens residents in a huge area of Tuolumne County ranging from Groveland to Tuolumne City to Cherry Lake and all the way to Mi-Wuk Village. Yearly fires in Tuolumne County are common but it has been years since a fire this size effected the area. Even those with years of experience being evacuated due to fires are finding themselves nervous and frightened by the Rim Fire that threatens their homes and day to day life.
Yesterday, in the late afternoon, officials announced that they are concerned over long range spot fires popping up due to high winds in the area and residents feel as though the majority of Tuolumne County is under an evacuation advisory at the least. Many residents are posting their photos, videos and updates to Facebook as a way to help keep others informed and make sure their friends and family living outside of Tuolumne County are aware of their safety and concerns over the Rim Fire. If you have never been through a fire evacuation you should know that there is nothing more frightening than seeing the plumes of smoke, the lines of fire trucks entering your area, the sound of planes and helicopters over head, and having to pack what you can into your vehicle in case you need to leave in a hurry.
The list of towns and areas in Tuolumne County that are currently under an evacuation order or advisory due to the Rim Fire is huge and encompasses roughly half of the county. There is an evacuation center at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds and the Red Cross is looking into opening a second center as well.
