Ever since Kate Middleton’s first official portrait was released yesterday, people have been weighing in both positively and negatively on the portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge. Comments began almost immediately at E! News Online on Jan. 11.
So what does everybody think? The consensus of most people is that Kate Middleton looks much older in the portrait. Some commenters have said that her hair looks almost gray, again aging the 31-year-old Duchess. The one thing that doesn’t seem to bother anyone is the fact that the artist changed her eye color to better match her blouse.
Apparently, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge like the portrait. It was reported that Kate herself told reporters she thought it was “brilliant” while Prince William said it was “absolutely beautiful.” Artist Paul Emsley was hand-picked by Kate to paint the portrait.
Mr. Emsley said he wanted to show Kate’s natural, rather than official self, thus his reason to feature her smiling. Most people think that was a good choice, even though the smile is sort of half there in the portrait.
Here are some actual comments from E! Online. As you’ll see, most of them are negative. (Comments are verbatim.)
“Too bad they made her look 20 years older.”
“Only 20 years? The good news is they'll be able to do some (minor) updates and roll it out again in 30 years as Queen Catherine"
“The weird wash-out of the color of the painting almost makes her hair look like it's graying, so maybe that's it...unless that's just the lighting in the room when they took the picture...”
“Yep. She looks OLD. And her beautiful smile is missing.”
“Looks like they made her nose twice as large. Not a good picture.”
“I'm pretty surprised by this picture...really? Regardless of what anyone thinks of her personally, she's a very pretty lady and this portait does her no justice whatsoever.”
“The picture is really good....talented artist but it doesn't do her justice. she is more gorgeous in other pics”
“This is not doing her beautiful face justice at all! I hate it.”
“I think the picture is very accurate. She does look much older than what she really is. Same with William - they both look like they are in their early 40s.”
My opinion sort of runs with the majority here. I think Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, is a very beautiful woman and I don't think this portrait does her justice. I think it makes her look considerably older and I would have preferred a full smile. Kate has a great smile!
