Akron ,Ohio - The genius and the madness of acclaimed musical powerhouse Jon Oliva shook Ohio metal heads to their core last night . Fans came from as far North as Toronto and South as Dayton and all points in-between. The mastermind behind Savatage ,Trans-Siberian Orchestra , Dr Butcher and Jon Oliva’s Pain brought his “Storytellers Tour” to Akron's Rippers Rock House last night .The concept was simple and beautiful all at the same time . He played for the fans his favorite songs from his musical past and the stories about writing and recording them. With great humor and wit he delighted the crowd and with shock and awe he musically surprised us . I have been a fan a long time however I was unaware he played so many instruments and did a major of the recordings on later Savatage albums . Jon was accompanied on stage by drummer Christopher Kinder and bassist Jason Jennings . The performance contained unknown songs written by his late brother Criss Oliva which are on release of “ Raise The Curtain “ . The songs “ Father Time “ and “ Ten Years” which really made me miss the guitar playing of Criss Oliva . Other songs including in the set included were “ Out On The Streets “ “ Summers Rain “ . From one of my favorite albums “ Streets “ he did “ Jesus Saves “ and “ Tonight He Grins Again “ and “ Somewhere in Time” . I am actually not sure how many songs were performed but it was well over two hours of music . The top of my list was “ When The Crowds Are Gone “ and some of the lesser known works as well . The joking with the audience and fun stories behind the music , to talking about playing Kiss, to stealing from Queen it all made it a night of magic . The band is currently on a short tour however if they come anywhere near you I recommend you go see them.
