There is a hoaxed e-mail that has been circulated through the cyber world, for 10 years, that tells people on August 27th the planet Mars will be close enough to Earth that it will look like a second Moon in the night sky. The e-mail is based on an actual event that happened on August 27, 2003 when the planet Mars was at its closet point in 60,000 years. On that day Mars was only 34.65 million miles away but still only appeared to be about 1/72nd the size of the Moon in the night sky.
The e-mail, which this year expanded to Facebook, doesn't seem to have any virus or malware attacked to it. It is only a harmless chain letter meant to foul the recipient and get them to send it on to their friends. Even though it doesn't cause any harm to your computer it can still cause harm to you for two reasons it makes you look foolish when you send this off to your friends and can trick your mind into perceive something that isn't there.
Most likely the reason this e-mail tricks anyone into believing it is beause Mars has often been the been the setting for fiction, is our neighboring planet and so close to Earth in size. It is thee same reason that so many people panicked over the the 1938 airing of War of the Worlds when Orson Welles made the Martian invasion sound so realistic.
The following are a couple of facts about the “Red” planet from the website space.com:
Fact: Mars will not appear as large as the moon on Aug. 27 (or any other date for that matter).
Fact: Mars is currently approaching Earth, but only very slowly and very gradually. On April 14, 2014, it will come within 57.4 million miles (92.3 million km) of our planet. By then it will appear just a trifle brighter than the brightest star in the sky, Sirius. But it will appear star-like, and certainly will not in anyway remotely resemble a full moon-sized object.
