The Return of the "Canadian Tuxedo"

Q: What are Mario and Luigi’s overalls made out of?
A: Denim, denim, denim…

Denim Prevails for Spring and Summer 2010
Converse; dsquared2; Topman; RVCA

Get the joke? Read it again, aloud, if you didn't. Now brace yourself for something that’s not a joke: the return of the “Canadian Tuxedo.” That’s right - jean is quickly stealing the scene of men’s west coast fashion, especially in Southern California, the region that truly embodies the term “casual-chic.” Denim prevails as the fabric of choice in nearly every category of apparel and accessories for the upcoming spring and summer months. Try some of the following styles to be casual-cool and on top of the trend. Don’t get overzealous though, pull it off by dabbling, not overdoing.

Denim companies everywhere are embracing the trend with button-down shirts in a wide array of washes. If you plan to dive into the deep end with a denim button-down, be sure to pair it with bottoms in a contrasting colorway – no two washes worn together should be too similar. Also, take it easy on the embellishments – contrast stitching or buttons are fine, but try to steer clear of embroidery, studs or anything else too flashy. A few brands that have gotten it just-right include: MEK Denim; 44mm with its End of Era Shirt; Ambiguous with its Bruno Shirt ; and dsquared2.

Next on the summer must-have list is a pair of jean cut-off shorts. There are styles to flatter all body types, in both cuffed styles and fringed. For a beachy, casual vibe, try a distressed wash like that of True Religion or Topman. For a cleaner, more polished look, try a slimmer cut or a darker wash, such as the 2x4 Cut-Off Short from the Volcom or Topman's denim short with a striped roll.

And for those who aren’t entirely convinced, you can still get the look subtly by trying a denim accessory such as a pair of Converse All Stars in new colorway, dark denim; or RVCA’s Levine Hat in a dark denim colorway with tan leather detailing
