How would you like to be fired by email, the Sunday before Christmas, for no reason other than greed? That's what happened to all the employees of Snarf's Sub Shop's 600 W. Chicago Avenue location in Chicago. I never even heard of this place, until the mass firing hit the interwebs, including Gawker.com. They're based out of Colorado and are busy building locations in Austin, TX, etc.
As it turns out, a couple of weeks ago, some employees and their supporters had asked for a living wage. Chicago's expensive and what might be a living wage in your hometown may not be sufficient there. They were asking for $15 an hour. Now, don't go yelling that even our soldiers don't get that, because A) I believe our soldiers should be paid more and B) that's a specious argument.
I'm from Chicago, born right in the city. My mom still lives there and my dad was planted before his time in a Chicagoland graveyard . . . much of the stress that helped kill him came this time of year, 32 years ago. There were record cold temps. A kerosene heating stove in his furniture store -- built at the turn of the last century -- exploded and the inside of the 4 story building burned to the ground. My doggie was in there and died. In the cold and the holidays/New Year . . . our family lost everything and we all were never the same. I feel for these Snarf's employees!
I personally will never darken the doorway of any of their establishments and I hope lots of good people feel as I do.
