The Replacements release brand new song

/*-->*/

Today marks some pretty good news for fans of “The Mats” as The Replacements released a cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “I’m Not Sayin’” through Pitchfork earlier today. The song is upbeat and embodies The Replacements’ seminal post-punk meets alternative rock sound.

Tommy Stinson has been busy playing bass with Guns N’ Roses since 1998, but that didn’t stop him from reconnecting with Paul Westerberg and company for this cover. The Replacements have not released an album since 1990’s All Shook Down, so this new song is definitely promising.

In fact, “I’m Not Sayin’” will be part of The Replacement’s Songs for Slim reunion EP. This album will benefit guitarist Slim Dunlap, who is partially paralyzed from a stroke in February 2012. Pitchfork also reports that the EP will receive a digital release on March 5, with a vinyl release following on April 16.

The Songs for Slim project will also feature musical heavyweights like R.E.M., The Jayhawks, and fellow Minnesotan Craig Finn of The Hold Steady.
