Try as it might the weather wasn't going to be the story of the Shaky Knees Music Fest on Saturday evening. As hard as the rain came down a little before 8pm you were left to think that a second day of rain during the evening hours would define Shaky Knees 2014 but that wasn't ever to be the case when Billie Joe Armstrong joined The Replacements on stage for much of their set on the Piedmont stage.
Saturday was overcast all day and occasional showers gave way to a heavy downpour in the early evening just as it had done on Friday night. Last years rain resulted in the festival site becoming a quagmire with everything coated in mud. The change in location meant that paradise had been paved and a parking lot proved to be a better site at least from the perspective of keeping your personal belongings clean.
With little or no shelter offered by the Atlantic Station site, ponchos were the fashion accessory of choice and even those were of marginal help as heavy as it was raining. Others stopped trying and embraced the soaking experience.
With a line-up on Saturday that included Modest Mouse (who were so modest they played most of their set in the dark!), Portugal. The Man, Conor Oberst the music was always going to be great . The crowd moved with relative ease from stage to stage providing each act with an appreciative audience.
The highlight of the day was the surprise provided when Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day joined The Replacements on stage for almost their entire set. Reprising a role he first took on at Coachella last month, Armstrong came on to rapturous applause and he was obviously enjoying his time on stage playing guitar and singing backing vocals.
Shaky Knees concludes today at Atlantic Station with Alabama Shakes, Violent Femmes, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros headlining. Tickets are still available and the weather promises to be the best it has been all weekend.
