Happy Solstice Atlanta!
"The joyous festival of Christmas (December 25th) is celebrated each year by millions of people all over the world. Marking the birth of Jesus Christ, it is also the last and most important of the four traditional "quarter days", signaling the beginning of each quarter of the year and welcoming each of the four seasons. These holidays, communally celebrated during the "Age of Faith", were reassigned from already established astrologically-based pagan festivities. The other quarter days are Lady Day (Annunciation) on March 25, St. John the Baptist Day on June 24 and Michaelmas on September 29." (More)

Christianity was adopted as the official religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century. Though both the date and the year of Christ's birth are unknown, the early church adopted December 25th as the birth date in hopes of more easily converting pagans worshipers to Christianity. Pagan cultures had long celebrated the birth of their Sun Gods during the Winter Solstice.
And so it came to be that what once was a pagan celebration of the rebirth of the pagan Sun gods became the Christian celebration of the birth of the Son of God.
Though Christianity now claims December 25th each year as the appointed day for celebration of the birth of Christ, Christmas is truly a seasonal celebration of the rebirth of the Sun at the deepest night of the solstice. So whether you celebrate the birth of the "Son" or the "Sun" it is clear that this day with all its symbology, gift giving and feasting has been celebrated for thousands of years.
