The Reality of the Job Market Today as it Stands in the Springs

Is the economy still affecting jobs?  How is it affecting the job market here in Colorado Springs?  Here in the Springs there is a mighty push for college educations.  Schools here in Colorado Springs to check out online are www.everest.edu, www.coloradotech.edu, www.national.edu/and www.devry.edu. These schools are advertising all the time to go to school and earn a degree.  To earn a degree at these universities, also among UCCS and Pikes Peak Community College, will help in the long run from a $15,000 a year job to a $28,000 a year job respectively.  What do you do in the meantime?  Going to school and working seems to be the answer for earning a degree, and these schools require short-term commitments and job-seekers still need to pay the bills, mortgages and childcare.

There are pockets of job openings here and there, but the best way to find them is go to company websites such as www.progressive.com/ or www.walmart.com/ or www.costco.com/.  Earning an associate’s degree or diploma or certificate in a specialized field would be an avenue to consider.  It would take a shorter amount of time to earn one, it would be less expensive and you could be trained in a job that actually needs the skills only you can provide once trained.

The best way to get ahead is to possibly visit a campus representative for a lesser degree, but, in a specialized field, such as dental hygiene, web design, teaching assisting, retail and/or hospitality, medical administration, medical assisting, x-ray technician and other extremely specialized fields.  This seems to be your best bet in the short run rather than the long run.  If you can acquire a part-time job at places which require little to no heavy experience such as fast-food restaurants, hostess/host, telemarketing, retail or day labor, office help, companion to the elderly, or another job which requires little training, you could be pursuing a specialized degree at the same time. One thing for certain is there are many part-time jobs listed at www.craigslist.com.  Going to the temporary employment agencies is a good place to start, although in the Springs the temporary agencies are also seeking specialized skills as well, so be aware of this when signing up with them.

If going to school is not for you, consider taking one or two courses in Business English Writing or Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, even QuickBooks, to give you a needed skill in the Colorado Springs job market.  Maybe a refresher course in Math would do the trick in helping you with an accounting job.  Always be optimistic, there are jobs out there, and research job websites, such as www.snagajob.comor www.simplyhired.com/.  Make sure your Resume is up-to-date and have a standard cover letter with references.  The economy seems to be getting better and the jobs are still out there for the taking with school or without.
