The latest BLS Employment Situation report showed that 95,000 jobs were lost but the unemployment rate remained steady at 9.6% in September. How can so many jobs be lost and the unemployment rate remain the same? The BLS reported that 175,000 people left the labor force in September. ZeroHedge reported that while 95,000 jobs were lost, there were 175,000 less people in the labor force looking for jobs, which kept the unemployment rate steady. People generally drop out of the labor force when there are fewer jobs available.
Economists often cite the number of jobs created by the private sector as an indicator of job market strength. In September, the private sector created 64,000 jobs, which was less than forecast. Job loss in the government sector was a whopping 159,000 as state and locals governments battled with deficits, decreasing tax bases along with bloated and unmet pension obligations. Private sector job growth won’t be robust going forward since fewer people are working and as a result will purchase fewer goods and services, putting profits under pressure.
The US needs to create about 150,000 jobs a month to simply break even with workforce population growth, so when you consider that 95,000 jobs were lost last month and 150,000 need to be created, there was a shortage of at least 245,000 jobs in the month of September.
366,000 jobs disappear
According to Mish Shedlock: For those unfamiliar with the birth/death model, monthly jobs adjustments are made by the BLS based on economic assumptions about the birth and death of businesses (not individuals).
The first revision to the birth/death statistic for the period March 2009 through March 2010 shows that 366,000 jobs that were reported by the BLS in their monthly employment reports simply weren’t created. What I find interesting about the revision is that the Trade, transportation and utilities sector was overstated by 144,000 jobs, the Manufacturing sector was overstated by 114,000 jobs, but the Financial activities and Professional and business services sectors were understated by 42,000 and 14,000 jobs, respectively. The taxpayer bailout of the large banks, investment firms and insurance companies produced 42,000 more jobs than originally reported, but while other sectors saw much worse job creation that first reported. See attached table for details.
The real unemployment rate
The unemployment rate that is pumped by media and most politicians is the U3 rate, which stands at 9.6% for September. The U3 rate is the best case scenario when it comes to reporting unemployment because it doesn’t include marginally attached (those who have stopped looking for work for a specific period of time) and the underemployed (those that are working part-time, but want full-time work.
When both discouraged workers and the underemployed are considered in the unemployment rate, you end up with the U6 rate, or the “real” unemployment rate. That rate increased from 16.7% to 17.1% in September.
According to the BLS: The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose by 612,000 over the month to 9.5 million. Over the past 2 months, the number of such workers has increased by 943,000.
Could many of these additional underemployed be 99ers? That’s a possibility, but it also includes workers whose hours were cut and others who want full-time work, but settle for part-time work.
While the 17.1% underemployment rate seems bad enough, it’s based on seasonal adjustments, which the BLS defines as: Over the year, the size of the Nation's labor force, the levels of employment and unemployment, and other measures of labor market activity undergo sharp fluctuations due to seasonal events including changes in weather, harvests, major holidays, and the opening and closing of schools. Because these seasonal events follow a more or less regular pattern each year, their influence on statistical trends can be eliminated by adjusting the statistics from month to month. These adjustments make it easier to observe the cyclical, long term trend and other nonseasonal movements in the series. In evaluating changes in a seasonally adjusted series, it is important to note that seasonal adjustment is an approximation and initial adjustment must be based on experience.
Gallup, on the other hand, doesn’t use seasonal adjustments in its underemployment reports. As a result, according to Gallup, the September underemployment rate was 18.6%. See attached graph for details.
Gallup reports http://www.gallup.com/poll/143039/Gallup-Finds-Unemployment-Highest-Level-May.aspx: Certain groups are faring worse than the national average. Thirty percent of Americans aged 18 to 29, 24% of those with no college education, and 22% of women are underemployed so far in September.
Gallup classifies American workers as underemployed if they are either unemployed or working part time but wanting full-time work. The findings reflect more than 18,000 phone interviews with U.S. adults aged 18 and older in the workforce, collected over a 30-day period. Gallup's results are not seasonally adjusted and tend to be a precursor of government reports by approximately two weeks.
But when it comes to the real unemployment rate, John Williams of Shadowstats.com paints an even bleaker picture with an underemployment rate of near 23%.
The seasonally-adjusted SGS Alternate Unemployment Rate reflects current unemployment reporting methodology adjusted for SGS-estimated long-term discouraged workers, who were defined out of official existence in 1994. That estimate is added to the BLS estimate of U-6 unemployment, which includes short-term discouraged workers.
See attached graph for full details.
All three underemployment reports show a struggling job market that seems stuck in neutral, unless you need a survival part-time job.
July and August job creation revised downward
The previous two months saw a revised, 15,000 increase in the number of jobs lost. August's total was revised to a loss of 57,000, slightly worse than the previously estimated 54,000. And July's number was revised considerably more, to a loss of 66,000 from 54,000. See full article from DailyFinance: http://srph.it/bhLwWT
Since job creation is painstakingly slow and Republicans are blocking all attempts to fund or create jobs, it will take years before there are enough jobs for all those that want to work. The US lost 8.5 million jobs in 2008/2009 and the private sector has created about 800,000 jobs so far in 2010. At that rate, barring any further government layoffs, it will take about 8 years to return to full employment.
Job creation is a necessity and extended unemployment benefits are required until jobs are more plentiful.
In fact, there's an interesting campaign video of California Republican senate candidate Carly Fiorina is being portrayed as a job killer. She claims to be a job creator, but she obviously destroyed and outsourced thousands of American jobs.
From the NYT: The video, which asserts that the workers are among 30,000 whose jobs were shipped overseas when she ran the company, comes as dozens of candidates in both parties run campaign advertisements criticizing their opponents for supporting policies that encourage outsourcing American jobs.

It appears that we are caught up in a kind of Ponzi Scheme called unemployment insurance compensation. The government collects payments from workers and employers and uses it how it wishes instead of putting it into a fund that pays interest. People who have worked all of their lives cannot collect unemployment insurance compensation because it was used up by government for other expenses. The entire credit crunch was a result of a giant government Ponzi scheme because the fractional reserve currency was backed by fiat or fake central bank reserves. Social Security is another Ponzi scheme, but with fewer workers paying into it the fund may become bankrupt. The sham UI system has left the unemployed in the same position of Bernard Madoff's investors. Who knew that most of the money was being siphoned off? The unemployment insurance pyramid scheme is another means to take the assets away from the American people. Congress is hesitant to "borrow" more money to pay those who need Tier 5 because it has used the money that was taken out for unemployment insurance compensation. Investors have control over where they invest their money, but since unemployment insurance is automatically deducted there is no choice and no say where the money goes or how it is used. The money paid into unemployment insurance simply disappears and if the need arises for people to be compensated by the unemployment insurance then Congress must pass a bill such as S3706.
The unemployed are facing personal tragedy because of the government was just following a normal practice it had grown comfortable in using. The payroll tax that funds the state and federal unemployment insurance pool may be too low or the federal backup pool of money it uses to lend to the states in times of high unemployment may be too low too keep the fund viable. If that pool is empty then it has been drained, but what accounting do those who have paid into it have?
The unemployment insurance Ponzi scheme is imploding under its own weight and needs outside money to fund the expenditures necessary to keep the 99ers alive. Some politicians have called unemployment insurance unconstitutional and others would prefer that those who have exhausted their benefits simply face the future without food, shelter or medical care. Foreclosures and the collapse of retirement accounts has hit the middle class and many face an uncertain future. The 99ers know that the Democrats didn't help us when they had a chance to use Stimulus funds and we also know that the Republicans and Tea-baggers will not help the unemployed. All we do know is that we have been betrayed by an unemployment insurance compensation Ponzi scheme that has bankrupt many and is continuing to destroy more lives every day.
Very informative Mike, and alot better video than the "aint got nothing better to do than play with bull balls"
I never believe the numbers comming out of the Labor Department. It was predicted that the numbers this month would be manipulated to give Democrats a small edge in the upcoming elections. Depite this scam from the Obama administration, I am hopeful that after the elections, the long term unemployed will finally get the help we need.
In these times, convicts are far more fortunate than 99ers. 99ers have nothing and convicts have at least some bed, blanket, food, and even access to health care, physical health regiment and even education. 99ers don't even have those anymore. The only thing convicts needs to worry about is getting raped and all unemployed are already raped with the corrupt system. Republicans are hiding behind the walls of morality, so "Where is morality when they let their citizens fall from one by one to bulk by bulk as they plow and rape through!?" Mike I just went and look for retraining courses because I am a 99er and they wanted 10 job openings before they train me. Over half a day and I cannot tie 1 jobs with 10 openings. That is how bad our economy is and that is how tight our job market is. I remember when we get to have those paper works and show that we are looking for work, and this is why it is hard to monitor the 99ers and unemployment because those paper works are gone. The government will listen to those who have the list rather than collective data from house call to the next. I don't know who is running and presenting ideas to the senate and government, but there is some number of unemployed, under employed and 99ers. Add newly grads of both high school and college and that's how much you have competing for jobs. If the ratio said that there is 1 job opening for every 5 unemployed, then how many people are actually gunning for 1 job with the combined newly grads from high school, college, 99ers, underemployed and unemployed!? This is a crime against humanity and if they can't be prosecuted in this life, like Al Grayson said, "May God have mercy on your souls!"
Our voices are not being heard by the Main Stream Media because we are asking the wrong people for help! The President, the Senate, Congress. These people don’t care unless helping us benefits them or their party’s election! Contacting the news organizations does not work, they only report what their told to!
I suggest writing, calling and E-mailing celebrities that have nightly access to America’s main stream media to speak out on our behalf.
I apologize in advance if you see this request repeated in other blogs, however I am posting it everyday in as many places as possible. With your help please re-post. I’m asking for others to help in asking any celebrity you know to mention 99ers or Tier 5 in any interview they may have with the media. I’m sure they have unemployed friends, family or someone they know that that has run out of money and hope!
If Paris Hilton or Lindsey Lohan spoke out for us or wore a 99ers, Tier 5, T-Shirt this would be on every news station repeatedly all day long.
There are people like Angelina Jolie, Annie Lennox, Bono, Brad Pitt, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Eva Longoria, George Clooney, Jackie Chan, Denzel Washington, Madonna ,Paul McCartney, Scarlett Johansson, Sheryl Crow, Ozzy Osbourne, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, and many others that support important causes. Also contact any fan club you may belong to, and have all kids Twitter, Face book or My Space their friends, just have them mention 99ers or Tier 5, and have the media question what are these people talking about?
We are in a crisis situation just as important as other headline news such as The Miners trapped in Chile, the War in Pakistan, Anti Gay attacks, Haiti, PETA, Habitat For Humanity, We may soon require some of these services ourselves without a Tier 5 Extension such as The Red Cross, Save the Children, Homelessness, Human Rights, Hunger, Mental Challenges, Suicide Hotlines.
For my other comments Google: Glenn B NJ Unemployment Extension
Glenn B NJ has a great point. If Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton would just hold up a sign that says "Save the #99ers NOW!" the lamestream media would have to do a cover story on People/Us Magazine to explain what "#99ers" means. Then our "representatives" in Congress would have to enter copies into the Congressional Record as they speechify as to what they're doing about this crisis...
Oh, wait, they are taking a PAID recess to run for reelection, and won't ask Pelosi and Reid to summon them back into session to do the people's work. Of course, those who are VOTED OUT OF OFFICE will have to scramble to become lobbyists, so there will be no help during the 'Lame Duck' session afterwards, either!
Hmmmm...maybe asking Hugo Chavez or Mr. Putin or some other guy of this sort for help would work out better, since our own leaders do not give a damn...and I don't think that our celebs would care more neither, they are too busy with Africa, Haiti, etc...and also, with their own salvation as well, they are slowly going down the toilette as well, unfortunately.
Really good article - thanks.
the 'oterh' problem devloping is the quality of jobs being created. The majority of jobs that have been 'created' are low-playing jobs. This is a trend which I believe will continue if it's left up to the corporate sector and the right-wing politicians that are only interested in profitability and will continue to block legislation to stop outsourcing and push for decreasing minimum wages, tax incentives for the wealthiest Americans and tax/trade poloicies that are designed to be in the best interests of business and not in the best interests of American workers.
I KNEW IT!! WE ARE SLOWLY DYING WHILE THEY'RE THINKING OF THE NEXT LIE TO SAVE FACE!!
BLS stands for Bureau of Labor Sheiskopfs. Not that I would want anyone else to lose their yobs, however firing them all would reduce the deficit, and not give the lamestream media drivel to report, instead of focusing on the plight of the 99ers. Wouldn't it be great if there were 24/7 hourly updates, similar to the bulletins being issued about the South American coal miners who are about to be rescued after being trapped underground for two months? Big Ed can't do it all himself...
Right on with this article. After a year of searching after losing a $13/hour job due to the economy for a job that paid at least $10 or over, searching in 4 states thinking it would be different elsewhere, I gave up because for jobs paying over $10 per hour have SO MANY PEOPLE APPLYING it's useless to try. So I got a 16 hour a week job caregiving and was just now hired by Walmart. If I had of had a mortgate and/or car payment, both would be down the toilet. I rented instead, lost my place, moved in with my elderly mother, sold half of my stuff and am now renting a room. Now, the statistics that don't see people and the politicians and news commentators that don't care will say I'm employed and be happy. But if the U.S. We are to be happy with, this country is in the toilet. No, it's under the toilet.
Oh, I forgot to say this. Now I'm making a little under $9/hour.
66.6% of my household is unemployed
I am a 99er with little to laugh about lately.......
But Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan coming to the rescue of 99ers ...... well that's pretty funny.
Why dont we ask Spiderman or Batman to help us.
Heaven help us
Great article as always Mike, and great posts by everyone else. Good luck to all here and those who have lost web communication abilities.
I'm hoping someone will have the answer to a burning question that has actually kept a knot in my stomach and has caused my little amount of sleep to be lessened.
Question: When the unemployment figures are released, there is always a mention of 'those who have given up looking for work'. How is this 'group' of people counted to be added into the percentages?
I've been out of work since Dec, 2007, exhausted all benefits in April 2010 and still continue to look for a job every day. Heck, I even moved from Los Angeles to the South East to save what little $$ I had left on living expenses and the hope to find an area of the country that doesn't discriminate against someone over 50. After 1 year, I have not gotten 1 single interview - same as in L.A.
I collected out of California - a state that does not allow you to continue to 'report' after you've exhausted benefits. Am I considered a person who has 'given up' b/c I no longer collect a check or file a 'report'?
Sorry to hear about your job struggles and I hope they improve soon.
Regarding your question, here's what I wrote in an earlier post: As long as you are not working, but still looking for work in some capacity, you are counted as unemployed. It doesn’t matter if you have exhausted unemployment benefits, you will still be counted as unemployed. The difference is what category of unemployed you will be considered; U3 (Official Unemployment Rate), U4, or U5. You can see more of that explanation at www.examiner.com/unemployment-in-rochester/am-i-still-counted-as-unemplo... All the best, Mike
How's that hope and change working out for you? How many times have you seen someone post that? There is nothing worse than seeing people using smug responses when referring to the suffering of our nation as if the only thing that matters is winning seats in an election year. It simply sickens me.
GLENN B NJ HAS THE RIGHT IDEA, BUT I FEEL WE NEED SOMETHING LIKE ( FARMAID ) WHEN ALL THE FARMER'S WERE LOSEING THERE HOME'S AND LAND,TRACTOR'S COMBINES ETC. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE PRESIDENT, AND CONGRESS TO HERE US.DOES ANYBODY HAVE WILLIE NELSON'S ADDRESS. WHAT ABOUT NEIL YOUNG,JOHN MELENCAMP. THESE KIND OF PEOPLE WILL GET US RECOGNIZED, BUT WE NEED A LOT OF LAND TO PROMOTE OUR CAUSE. IS THERE ANY BODY OUT THERE WILLING TO HELP. WE ARE LOSEING ARE HOME'S, CANNOT EXPLAIN TO OUR CHILDREN WHY WE CAN'T BUY FOOD, WHY SANTA CLAUSE IS NOT COMEING THIS YEAR. HOW DO WE TELL OUR CHILDREN THAT THE BANK'S THAT OUR GOVERMENT BAILED OUT IS TAKEING ARE HOME. HOW DO WE TELL OUR CHILDREN THAT GLENN BECK SAY'S THAT WE ARE LAZY, NO GOOD BUM'S TRYING TO SPUNGE OFF THE GOVERNMENT AND THAT OBAMA DOES NOT CARE
This morning I had occasion to visit upon one of my old teaching work books from way back when. This class was spent on a wonderfully educational, entertaining week on pirates. One of my favorites – how ironic, now – a portrait by the classic artist, Howard Pyle, entitled “Marooned” (google it). Legend, and history, shares that a pirate who was disgraced might well be ‘marooned’ on a small treeless atoll or spit of sand that would disappear with the rising tide. He was given water for one day and a p!stol, with enough powder and lead to t@ke his own l!fe. Burn up with equatorial sun or chance sharks for a swim
of who knows how many sea miles to civilization. Or….as expected (you would think), he would accept the inevitable and b!ow his br@!ns out (censored).
But pirates were loathe to take their own lives. It brought even more sin in the afterlife and cursed his entire family, past, present, and future. What was a pirate to do? All options were fatal and torturous to one’s soul.
I found Pyle’s masterpiece and it brought back memories of teaching and the kids. But it also smacked me hard to look at it now and realize that my government has marooned me. But, mine is no disgrace. Forty-plus years of work, all taxes paid. A mere 99 weeks of unemployment benefits is 1/22 of my career in the private and public workplaces. So as I head to SS in a few years, 4.5% of my labors were “returned” to me. If my country was a baseball player, it’s batting average is .045.
I’m sure with all the enterprising and talented cartoonists there are in America someone will (if they haven’t already) drawn a cartoon based on Howard Pyle’s theme as the 99ers are left marooned, while the ship sails away . . . over the horizon.
Mike thanks for printing some reality. However in Illinois when you stop qualifying for UIB you are no longer counted as unemployed. I agree our real unemployment rate is at least 25%. What will happen when we reach 50%? I am spending my 401K before I even "retire". I am almost 60. What is next? Civil unrest and riots?
randymoe, you're right. I have family members in Chicago who are unemployed and all of them are aware of this as well. Here in TN, the same applies. Once you are off of EUC Tier 4, you simply disappear. The simple size of IL's and TN's labor pool helps account for continuing aggregate job losses yet a "stabilized new norm" of 9.6% nominal unemployment.
As of 10/05/2010 from the EDD website - 208,000 individuals in California have already run out of the maximum amount of extension benefits available.
Close to a quarter MILLION Californians are no longer counted as unemployed!!!!
Interesting about the California statistics. CA's population is more than 10% of the national population, so do we multiply by 10 to find the total number of people who have exceeded the maximum number of weeks of benefits? That would be about 2 million. I hear a lot of different numbers of exhaustees. Does anyone have a reliable figure?
TO: Bruce Willess.
Curses to you for copying my post of several weeks ago (either here or at All247news.com) and taking it as your own work. It may not be literary greatness, you thief, but it is my work, my life, and my words. It represents me not you. People around here "know" Pepper99 and how I write. Maybe one of them will recognize my post and speak up about having read it before.
A pox on you and serious hope that a moment of clarity and humility will visit upon you soon. We do not need to steal from each other. For what it is worth, Bruce, you are shameless.
I posted about contacting Oprah or someone with celebrity status several weeks ago and now someone is posting it as if it were a new idea! I dont really care how it gets out there as long as it does! I still like the idea of spraypainting "99" on everything and hanging banners to that effect of off overpasses, cause until this goes from local to national we wont be considered!
My apologies if the idea of contacting Celebs was someones before I wrote my post. However I don't care much for the recognition of writing it, just that some one reads it and if they think the IDEA is good pass it forward. My hats off to anyone that can get us a TIER 5 by any means necessary. I think a lot of the things we write may not have been read by others just tuning in. Because some people ask the same questions that have been asked before. When I do write something original if you agree please pass it forward no acknowledgment is necessary. That's why I indicated my name and the Google reference to other postings I have made. Again I thank you for your inspiration. Glenn B NJ
I think a great many of us have attempted to garner interest from our 'humanitarian' celebs for at least the last 6 months. Having said that, on the outside it appears to be a great idea (hence so many of us 99ers who were extraordinary and top-of-their-game workers way back when have had the same idea) but in reality the pleas to these 'famous' folks has pretty much fallen on deaf ears.
The humanitarian interests of our Government and our Hollywood Elites seem to fall anywhere BUT the United States - with a few minor exceptions (Farm Aide, some Gulf clean-up, etc.) The lure of International accolades appears to be stronger than actually doing the right thing and actually SHOWING as opposed to just saying "I am proud to be an American."
This is from 2 years ago. I guess it came true.
Saw this post on another blog....another small business owner dismayed that Obama was elected....look what he's going to do......this is going to happen all throughout the country to the middle class:
....."It's going to hurt our company but we will survive.
We'll have to increase our prices to the consumer slightly.
But my main concern is for my 33 employees. I sadly will have to lay off 4-5 people.
We are like a family so it will be hard but I came up with a way to choose which employees to lay off.
I walked through the parking lot today and took note of which cars had Obama bumper stickers. I think this is a fair and fitting way......"
Youre story should start with "This is from 10 years ago or even 30 when Reagan started this shit and left it to finish with the BUSHES
Urban legend. You see it everywhere. And now employers are supposedly laying people off for voting their conscience. They had methods like that in the Soviet Union, didn't they?

Diamond has been recognized by officials in the past. The news provider reports that earlier in the year, Diamond, who is considered by some to be an expert on tax policy and social security, was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the board of Federal Reserve. However, Republican Senator Richard Shelby from Alabama blocked the nomination because he said that Diamond did not have enough experience to be ready to serve on the board.
Diamond is one of 3 who shared the noble peace prize for thier work/views on unemployment! I know you fuckin repubs are out there, go fuck yourselves and leave me out of your stupidity, fuckin racist have to make my family suffer, fuck u!!

Is all of this language really necessary. Please lets not turn on each other. I know things are really bad but we have hope that it will get better. I'll bet whoever posted these comments is a really good person and just having a really bad day. My prayers are with you.
These over the top comments are a good example of how angry and desperate we are. It will only get worse as our Government continues to refuse to acknowledge we exist.
As human beings, we have a strong self preservation instinct and as we are put through more and more mental and physical torture by our country, we will lash out with more frequency and violence.
I honestly can't believe it is coming to this and I am afraid.
The World is watching.
Glad you like my comments, you see the edge, coming :-]
In NO WAY would I ever advocate violence to solve a problem, but there are others who will feel that that is the only way to bring attention to their plight. It happens all over the world, but that doesn't make it right.
But I bet you'll be glad when you get a check thanks to that mentality, because you will not, due to washingtons resolve!
A little FYI for those who shop @"FYE" their costumer service is based in the northern phillipines! If you like broken english and your jobs outsourced I suggest shopping there if not BOYCOTT THE MOTHER FUCKER!
