The faux filibuster against Obamacare was always going to be a losing battle, but for certain factions in Washington, it was part of a strategy they hope will lead to a big win in the long run, namely the White House in 2016.
In a piece for the Daily Beast, Washington beat writer Patricia Murphy says GOP Sen Ted Cruz is just the poster boy for powerful conservative groups --a sort of Defund Obamacare, Incorporated-- that had been looking for a new mascot long before anyone had ever heard of the Texas firebrand. Tea Partiers in Texas and Jim DeMint conservatives in Washington teamed with special interest groups like the Senate Conservatives Fund, Senate Conservatives Action, the Club for Growth and the Koch Brother-funded FreedomWorks to hand pick a fresh and feisty figurehead who could do their bidding. They got it in Ted Cruz. They plowed millions into his primary campaign (more than any other candidate in the race), lifting him to victory in Texas.
One year later and Cruz has become the superstar these conservative groups were looking to harness. A nationwide multimedia campaign that ran in August, typically a dead period for fundraising, collect $1.5 million plus a massive email list of potential like-minded donors, what al special interest groups see as "nothing less than a warchest-in-waiting." To do what? Wage war against all enemies in the 2014 midterm elections and the 2016 presidential race. In a sense, Ted Cruz is just a patsy, the useful idiot. Does he care? Probably not, especially if the prize at the end is winning the presidency in 2016.
As has always been the case, long before Ted Cruz, a politician by any other name is just a whore.
