Ever wondered how the housewives maintain those scary-perfect bodies? Well, they actually work at it. A recent episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County featured Alexis and Gretchen at a spin class at YAS Fitness Center in Costa Mesa.

The sign on the front brings a smile: “No Chanting, No Granola, No Sanskrit.” You know you’ve arrived somewhere totally different. Founded by tri-athlete and cancer survivor, Kimberly Fowler, YAS offers a unique combination of Yoga for Athletes® and Spinning® classes.

The yoga classes are not what you’d expect – no new age music and chants here. The one-hour sessions are actually designed to help athletes and the average person who works out with their tightest, most injury-prone areas: hips, knees, lower back and shoulders. The goal is to improve strength, flexibility and balance in a motivating, not necessarily spiritual, environment.

The 40-minute indoor cycling (spin) classes are high-energy, high-voltage and inspiring. Who wouldn’t be inspired by the idea of burning 500+ calories that quickly? It’s an intense cardio workout with music pumping. Don’t be intimidated if you’re new – Gretchen was challenged too, and she’s in incredible shape. Instructors provide lots of cues and feedback so you don’t get lost.

You can also take a YAS class, which is half hour of cycling followed by a half hour of yoga. That’s a great combo if you don’t have a lot of time.

The industrial feel of YAS is very cool and modern, to the point where the uninitiated could feel a bit intimidated. Good news! The receptionists and instructors, like Kris Pennel, are friendly and focused on giving a welcoming experience and a tough workout.

No on-site childcare is available, but with the packed class schedule and convenient location at 291 East 17th Street in Costa Mesa, it’s a must-try for moms. Call 949-515-8888 or visit YAS’s website to download a pass for a free class and for pricing info. Who knows, you might catch one of the housewives there!

YAS is offering a December special of 10 classes for $100 ($30 savings).
