Let's be real right now. I have not been 100% vegan for almost two years now. Am I a bad vegan? Well, yes. I am not vegan at all! Am I a bad person? No!

I have experimented through the years with a variety of lifestyle and dietary changes. I felt great when I was a pescatarian, a vegetarian, a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and when I was a vegan. I even felt great when I was an omnivore. The key to feeling great is listening to your body. I have learned that sometimes my body wants ice cream and cake, and sometimes it wants kale and lemon water (usually after the cake days). But no matter what I crave or I consume, I own it. I feel good about my decision. I don't regret. That is what makes me feel great!

Yes, as a nutritionist I am a huge advocate for healthy eating. But when you stray away from your "diet" or your "label" because you have a craving, don't feel bad about it, own it! You deserve a treat occasionally. Besides, if you deprive yourself the small things, you will crave them even more. One important thing I learned from my years of a strict healthy vegan diet is that I was depriving myself what I really wanted. Once I allowed myself to have a little bit of something outside my dietary guidelines, I indulged! I'm not saying vegan is bad or not vegan is good, I am simply saying if you want a treat (a vegan treat counts!) then by all means, have one. Just remember to be mindful about what you consume and listen to your body. Practice moderation and treat yourself well.
