The real Catholic definition of love

See also

Love has been hijacked, distorted, and sold on the open market. Something priceless--Someone Eternal--has been caricatured by charlatans as a mere emotion, a thrill, an experience associated with the 'love' of ice cream, soda, sex, and skydiving.

Yet none of these false portrayals have died for us on the Cross--none of these offers eternal salvation.

"Beloved, we love God because
he first loved us.
If anyone says, “I love God,”
but hates his brother, he is a liar;
for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen
cannot love God whom he has not seen...

In this way we know that we love the children of God
when we love God and obey his commandments.
" 1 John 4:19--5:4

Real Love is first received from God as grace--undeserved. Real Love is love of men and women, tangible to the five senses, in our lives. Real love is the will to do what is right and just, for their benefit, even if they are royal pains in the ass! Yet, Real love of neighbor must be safeguarded from both people-pleasing to one extreme, and exploitation (utilitarianism) to another, through Love of God in following His Commandments.

Real love is gospel Incarnate in Jesus--and prayerfully obedient in the Holy Spirit.

"From fraud and violence he shall redeem them,
and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
May they be prayed for continually;
day by day shall they bless him
." Psalm 72:1-2, 14-15, 17

Real Love is blessed and commemorated around the clock, continually, on every continent, in the Most Blessed Eucharistic Sacrifice of the Catholic Mass. The prayer of Love, to the Source of True Love, petitioning His Love for the world, is offered around the clock, continually, in the Divine Office of the Church. For God is Love--and Jesus is the Face, the Son, and the Word of Love.

"Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit...He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.

He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'”
Luke 4:14-22

Love, genuine love, comes from the Spirit of the Risen Christ. There is no other source of genuine Love. The world can manufacture romance, desire, sex, lust, concupiscence, and all sorts of childish flirtations, but none of these bring joy to the poor, liberate captives and addicts, let the despairing see hope, or the oppressed in spirit and body go free.

Only Jesus can do that. Only grace, bringing faith and hope, can give the gift of authentic Love.
