Actor Chris Hemsworth and Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs hosted the announcements as all of Hollywood tuned in to see who would get the chance at the golden statues. Although there has been buzz for different films, there are few that really stand out as clear front runners.
"Gravity" and "American Hustle" received the most nominations with ten each, both including Best Picture. "Captain Phillips" received six including Best Picture and supporting actor (Barkhad Abdi). "Dallas Buyers Club" received six as well with three major category nominations Best Picture, Actor (Matthew McConaughey) and and supporting actor (Jared Leto).
There were disappointments as well with the cheers. Hanks was overlooked again by the Academy for his role in "Phillips". A big hit this year, yet missed the expanded animation nominations was "Monsters University". Spike Jonze also did not get a nod this year, despite his win at the Globes for "Her". Another big surprise is "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" did not receive any recognition for any technical categories or Best Song. Many other hopefuls longed to hear their names called this morning, but failed to get that satisfaction and must wait another long year for their chance at the gold.
