The quest for natural energy

In an effort to retrieve the natural gas reserve on the east coast Hydraulic Fracturing, which has been a topic surrounded by controversy, the process is largely unregulated and has come under scrutiny due to the concerns over the potential harmful effects on human health. Better known as "fracking" currently Pennsylvania, New York, West Virgina, Ohio and Maryland have large untapped natural gas reserves.

Officials and citizens have responded with many proposed statutory framework towards finding ways to regulate fracking in order to meet the concerns about the extraction process.

The concern is due to a series of consistent problems viewed elsewhere, the EPA released a report earlier this month that connected natural gas drilling to a contaminated aquifer in Pavilion Wyoming, which found a direct link to the mixing of hydraulic fracturing fluid with ground water.

The coalition of lawmakers health professionals and environmentalists drafted their concerns to ALBANY, N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo back in October. Currently New York City has put a suspension on fracking activities until the department of conservation completes its review in the spring of 2012.
