Character actor Russell Johnson, who co-starred in the classic 1960's comedy, “Gilligan's Island,” has passed away. According to the Los Angeles Times, Johnson died of natural causes at his home in the state of Washington. His agent, Michael Eisenstadt, was quoted as saying that Johnson had been in good health and that he had died “peacefully in his sleep.”
Russell Johnson was probably best known for his portrayal of Professor Roy Hinkley on “Gilligan's Island.” The series revolved around seven shipwrecked people who were stranded on an island. The Professor often utilized his scientific expertise to conceive of inventions that would hopefully get them all rescued.
Russell Johnson also appeared in several 1950's westerns as well as in many television movies and series throughout the course of his career. His “Gilligan's Island” co-star, Dawn Wells, confirmed Johnson's passing via her Facebook account. In part, she wrote, “My 2 favorite people are now gone. My heart is broken.” Russell Johnson was 89. He is survived by his wife, Constance, and two adult children. May he rest in peace.
