The Prequel to the Wizard of Oz Hits Theaters This Weekend

This weekend, in some ways, finally marks the time when the big Hollywood movies start coming out. This weekend is a big movie that the studios actually hope will make money and not a hold-over from last year that the studios feel will not do well up against other films. So, this weekend sees the opening of a prequel to an old and beloved movie classic, another stellar period piece and acting performance by Tommy Lee Jones, and a very dark crime film.

Here are the movies opening in theaters March 8, 2013:

Oz the Great and Powerful - James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams. An illusionist and con-man by the name of Oscar ends up taking a hot air balloon to get out of a nasty situation and ends up in a magical land full of tiny people, a yellow-brick road, and three witches. Two of the witches seem like they have the potential to become evil, but the third claims to be a good witch. Events unfold that end up turning one of those witches into the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West that tormented children for years in the original film. The movie is directed by Sam Raimi, and is filled with dazzling set pieces and special effects. Rated PG.

Emperor - Matthew Fox, Tommy Lee Jones, Eriko Hatsune. A movie that takes place in the days, weeks and months after the end of World War II. Japan has surrendered and General Douglas MacArthur is trying to convince the people of Japan that America wants to help them rebuild and not occupy the country. However, he awaits a report from one of his subordinate generals about whether or not the Emperor of Japan should be allowed to remain as he his, or brought before a worldwide court and charged with crimes against humanity. That subordinate general, however, falls in love with a local Japanese woman, making things all the more complicated. Rated PG-13.

Dead Man Down - Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard. A dark crime story about the right-hand man of a local crime lord who ends up in a tangled romance with the wife of a crime victim. What the gangland kingpin does not know is that his right-hand man has been slowly and steadily infiltrating his gang to get revenge on him for destroying his quiet life years earlier. When the wife of the crime victim finds out who he is, she blackmails him to extract her own revenge, or reveal who and what he is to the crime lord. Rated R.
