The power of constant praise: part 1

The power of constant, unceasing praise: Part 1

Ps 35:28: "My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long."

I‘ve just finished reading a terrific short book called “Destined For The Throne” (Bethany House) by Dr. Paul Billheimer. Chapter 8 is entitled “The Problem of Faith”, and this chapter alone is worth the price of the book! In it, Dr. Billheimer discusses how we’re missing out on one of God’s great blessings: The importance and power of the power of constant, unceasing praise.

It’s amazing when we consider what the Bible has to say about what happens when praise God:

Ps 34:1 tells us “…I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips."
Ps 84:4 says: "Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.”
Ps 71:8 has this to say: "My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long."
Ps 92:1-2 reads: " It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night,"
Ps 71:14-15: "But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteousness, of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure."
Psa 71:23-24 "My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you-- I, whom you have redeemed. My tongue will tell of your righteous acts all day long…."
Ps 89:15-16: "Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD. They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your righteousness."
Ps 104:33: "I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live."
Ps 145:2: "Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever."

There’s many more verses, but you get the idea. The message seems to be pretty clear: We’d best be praising God, all day, every day! A close examination of scripture reveals that this is something that happens all the time in heaven:

Rev 4:8: "Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."

Rev 5:11-13 and Rev 19:1-5 echo the exact same theme. Ps 145:10 says this: "All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you."

As Dr. Billheimer points out:

“Surely that which occupies the total time and energies of heaven must be a fitting pattern for earth. For some reason the Church at large has underestimated the importance of praise. Many have had the idea that praise is a beautiful aesthetic exercise but has little practical value. But if praise is the highest occupation of angles, there must be some valid reason for it. If heaven considers it important to maintain a chorus of praise unceasingly day and night around the throne, it must be supremely efficacious. Would God tolerate an activity and exercise in heaven that is futile and irrational?”

A good question, indeed. Over the next few articles, were going to consider why we need to do this and how we should go about it. See you next time!
