The pot rocks at Gunpowder Falls State Park

Today, I'd like to share my new favourite spot for musing/meditating: the Pot Rocks at Gunpowder Falls State Park.

Location: Take Belair Road north of Perry Hall, make a right into the parking lot. Park in the auxiliary parking lot, then head to the back left corner of the lot to reach the the Lost Pond Trail, marked with a blue hash. The trail weaves a good bit, but follows the river pretty closely, with a few minor water crossing.

After a bit less than a mile, you'll come to a crossroads. To the left is the continuation of the Lost Pond Trail, which leads you up the hillside and up to some beautiful, open fields; but that's an adventure for another time. Bear right at the trail marker and continue hiking for about ten minutes, and you've reached the Pot Rocks.

I love clamouring out onto the rocks into the middle of the river, being gently bathed in the dull roar of the rapids, and just sitting for a spell. I always find inspiration when I come to this place. It's also a great place to go for a dip, since the rocks form a barrier in one point and create a convenient little pool. I was there last evening an hour before sunset, and saw two people kayaking and two groups of college kids going for a swim. They may have thought me a bit strange, sitting alone on a rock in the middle of the rapids... but hey, they were in my spot.

All in all, a very relaxing little spot, great to just sit and think or read or write. I'd love to have a picnic there. It's 1.2 miles to get there from the parking lot, so it only takes about a half an hour to hike to it. If you're trying to avoid people, I'd suggest going on a weekday; or just go a little bit before sunset (since the park closes then).
