The Pope says he is not a Marxist but is right about criticizing capitalism

Today, December 15, 2013 The Guardian ran a story about the ongoing debate about the Popes remarks about his statements on Capitalism.

The has stated that he is not a Marxist, a point made clear on a Secularite.com article posted a few weeks ago.

The statements up for debate stem around these comments:

As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or, for that matter, to any problems.

Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories, which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.

Two things should be obvious to anyone. Number one, the Pope is right. Capitalism will not now or ever solve poverty and social inequality, because the fact us, Capitalism thrives on both.

The second thing that is obvious, and now clear because the Pope has cleared it up himself, he is not a Marxist.

The Pope’s exact words:

"The ideology of Marxism is wrong. But I have met many Marxists in my life who are good people, so I don't feel offended," Francis was quoted as saying.

Now the Pope’s opinion here is that Marxism is wrong, clearly a Catholic would hold this position because Marxism removes all power from the Churches. A Marxist society would have no state religion.

While the Pope’s words sound rather empty coming from a man sitting on a Vatican throne, his message is still correct and for anyone listening, Catholic or not, it should be seen as a call to action to finally put an end to Capitalism and bring equality to our societies.
