The Pope Emeritus has had a mystical experience and continues to do so as he witnesses the good works of his successor, Pope Francis. On Wednesday Zenit reported a conversation between Benedict XVI and an anonymous source, which stated the former Pope was instructed by God to resign as the leader of the Catholic Church.
On February 28 Benedict XVI became the first Pope to resign in 600 years. The Pope Emeritus’ retirement stunned the Catholic faithful and the entire world. Many have pondered why, even after the retired Pope claimed it was due to his failing health.
On Sunday Benedict XVI visited Castel Gandolfo, his summer home and refuge after leaving office. Zenit reported the many visitors who have spoken with the Pope Emeritus, which included an anonymous source that visited with him a few weeks back, who had the opportunity to hear the former Pope’s decision for his resignation. Clarifying to the source that he had not seen an apparition, Joseph Ratzinger declared, "God had told me".
It was a mystical experience in which the Lord had developed in his heart an ‘absolute desire’ to remain alone with Him, withdrawn in prayer. This mystical experience has lasted all these months, increasing more and more the longing for a unique and direct relationship with the Lord.
The Pope Emeritus went on to suggest that he believes the choice was “the will of God”, especially as he witnesses Pope Francis’ “charisma”.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI currently resides at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery within the Vatican gardens.
